My initial thoughts about ITEC 7470- Educational Research were indifferent. I am pretty good at research and I completed most of the assignments for my Undergraduate Program following APA style. I have always felt that I am a strong writer and efficient at researching, interpreting, and providing supportive evidence for my written assignments. While this course did not seem to overwhelm me, I did become intimidated, at first, by the volume of course work required. This course is really more like 2-in-1, because you are developing your capstone proposal while learning about educational research. In the end, I found myself listening to assigned videos while driving to and from work, reviewing powerpoints prior to reading chapters and articles, and taking my time more on quizzes. I followed the old template for the capstone proposal, which lead to extra work, but I enjoyed the capstone aspect of the class the most. I feel very passionate about the project I created and am excited to begin!
I have learned a great deal during this course. I now know that there are multiple layers to educational research. First, whether a study is qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods affects the process by which it is conducted, the data that is gathered, and the analysis of results. I learned how to critique an article to determine the goals, participants, results, and implications of a study. I was able to apply this knowledge when analyzing peer-reviewed articles to find supportive ideas for my Capstone Proposal.
I understand that technology coaches are required to review research for many tools and resources that become available. Technology is always changing. As new technology emerges and old technology improves, coaches must be able to review research and applications to determine relevance and efficiency for their mentees. Coaches must stay up-to-date on technologies and resources that improve learning. I believe that the knowledge gained in Educational Research will help me support teachers and improve learning for students. I feel that I am more prepared to review in-depth studies and research resources than ever before.
