4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (PSC 4.2/ISTE 5b)
Artifact: Copyright Assignment
Reflection:
The artifact that demonstrates mastery of Standard 4.2 is the Copyright Assignment, which was created in ITEC 7445, Multimedia Web Design, during the summer 2019. The artifact is a PowerPoint presentation that focuses on copyright and fair use in education, specifically concerning videos in the classroom. This presentation was completed individually and organized with other candidates’ presentations (about various topics) to create a shared Copyright/Fair Use database of resources. The information is intended to shared with teachers to expand knowledge and of what teaches may legally do with materials used in an educational setting.
Standard 4.2, Safe, Healthy, Legal and Ethical Use, establishes the expectations to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. The presentation allowed me to model and facilitate appropriate uses of digital information and technologies as I provided guidelines for showing movies and videos in the classroom. The artifact begins with background knowledge about copyright laws and fair use laws, offers an evaluator tool, and then outlines what teachers may legally implement in classrooms under these laws. The artifact then presents three different scenarios for discussion of what the appropriate implementation would be. This allowed me to model the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of videos and images they find on the world wide web. The scenarios in the presentation allowed me to address everyday situations teachers find themselves in when using digital information and to make the laws more applicable and understandable.
In completing this artifact, I learned how to legally use media and video sources in the classroom. I discovered resources to evaluate the legality of use of digital information and technologies created by others. It is easy to locate any type of information on the internet, but acceptable use requires careful consideration of the purpose, length, and acquisition/credit. In future usage of this artifact’s presentation, I would create a QR code introduction page that would allow teachers to access the PowerPoint for their own future use. The artifact is intended to be shared, and this would be an easier means for sharing, so that the audience may explore the links contained in the presentation on their own terms.
The work that went in to creating this artifact impacted future faculty development. The presentation will provide faculty with information to safely, legally, and ethical use the digital information obtained easily from the internet. This information is not a common topic among teachers and students and is only addressed during preplanning training for about 30 minutes annually. Teachers are not currently provided with adequate resources to evaluate all forms of copyright/fair use applications, but this presentation could lead to sharing of better resources to assist teachers in making choices of digital media created by others.
